Meet Your Coach

MALCOLMresizedsmallMALCOLM DAYTON, LPC, CHT

Personal Medical Journey

I was born with severe asthma; and I developed intractable psoriasis throughout my elementary school years.  Both experiences deeply affected my sense of who I am in the world:   I came to view (not just my “body”), but my “self” as somehow “flawed”.

To keep up with others my age, however, I also began to learn (out of necessity) those behaviors that would positively influence symptom relief.

Nonetheless, I continued to experience exacerbations into adulthood –  so severe that I was admitted to National Jewish Hospital (a real godsend in learning to further manage symptoms and medications).

At that time, however, I also was  introduced to catabolic steroid medication.  As a result of the frequency and dosage, I experienced profound side effects including instability in mood, weight gain, fatigue and adrenal insufficiency — the latter resulting in a cycle of upper respiratory infections and steroid boosts that went on for months at a time over years –  (Please note, catabolic steroids are not the anabolic steroids so prevalent in sports media today).

Steroid side effects, however, taught me a powerful lesson:   In an attempt to better “control” illness, my life became out of control.  I’ve since learned to drop “control” from my wellness vocabulary.   “Choosing” provides a much more powerful perspective from which to experience chronic illness!

It took another 13 years for me to locate a physician who would team-with me before I would again be able to live prednisone-free!  Upon ending the damaging cycle of prednisone, however, I began experiencing symptoms that would escalate another two years before I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (as well as hypothyroidism and testosterone insufficiency).  By this time, in hindsight, it became clear that the four-decade thread running through my life had been autoimmune disorder.

I set out in earnest to explore and learn any and all skills to significantly enhance my day-to-day health and wellness experiences.

Those skills became the foundation supporting my professional service as a Coach and Licensed Counselor.

Professional Journey

My clinical background includes the last 15 years in private practice serving individuals with chronic medical illness (as well as affected family members).

Expanding upon my personal health experiences, I set out to learn precisely those skill sets most effective for individuals (and family members) dealing with chronic illness — that is, the basic, applied techniques necessary to empower you to maximize your daily living performance (in the face of chronic illness).

Those same skill sets form the foundation to success experienced by my clinical coaching clients — the same skills I bring to Coaching Your Self Healing experience.

My professional education includes:

  • 15 years Licensed Professional Counselor (specializing in Behavioral  Medicine)
  • Certification in MindBody Medicine
  • Certification in Hypnotherapy (specializing in Medical Hypnotherapy)
  • Doctoral work in neuropsychology and molecular biology (in process)
  • Masters Degree in Counseling
  • BS in Biology & Psychology (Phi Beta Kappa)

My coaching is firmly grounded in the healing principle (first asserted by Carl Jung over 60 years ago):

I am not what happened to me;

I am what I choose to become.”
