Remember when you were younger, you could play (or study) ALL night, and rebound within a matter of hours — maybe 2 days at most?

With that ability some decades behind me, I still like to think I CAN expend high energy over a prolonged period — and to a degree, I can,  . . . BUT, I simply do not recover in a matter of hours.  It now takes me 10 days to 2 weeks to get back up and running with any kind of energy.

That’s exactly what happened to me the last couple of weeks:  I pushed hard to complete a passion-filled project assisting a group of colleagues, and then I CRASHED and BURNED. . . big time!

While recovering, I realized I always employ a powerful, effective, recovery principle; a skilled response-ability  – but one I rarely talk about, as it just comes second nature to me.  It’s called “the law of the vital few” (or the Pareto Principle).  It’s actually mis-identified as the “80-20 rule”.  You know, the idea that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.

Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist, who in 1906 made the “vital few” observation.  Mathematically, it does not have to be 80-20 (e.g., it can be any percentage between 50% and 100%) for specific situations; but 80-20 has been popularized.  The principle notion is that some larger percentage of your results occurs as a result of some smaller percentage of your effort — that might be 80-20 or 60-40 or 90-10!

The KEY is to identify those “few” and “vital” actions that are necessary to create the maximum possible results!

The power of this principle is important to keep in your awareness, because too often we expend too much energy for too little return.  And when it comes to your health, wellness, and optimal performance, you simply MUST APPLY the Pareto Principle — especially during any period of recovery or recuperation!

So, the next time you are dealing with a sudden illness, a set-back, a challenge, grieving, think of the rhyme “Pareto Who? — Law of the Vital Few!” to guide you:

1.  Rather than focusing on “effort”, FOCUS ON RESULTS.

2.  Ask:  “What ‘VITAL FEW’ steps must I take to gain the most recovery?”

3.  Then, place your focus and energy only on what is absolutely necessary to generate the greatest nourishment until you are energetically refreshed and renewed.

It’s a powerful principle to keep in mind, and to apply throughout your day, every day!  Make it second nature in your health, wellness, & performance!

I have been blessed with two very recent occasions in which I gave myself the gift of luxuriating in listening-with-my-whole-bodymind — and I just want to share them with you in the hopes they bring added peace, soul, beauty and heart to you today . . . as you listen with your whole bodymind.

Again today, during a break, I stopped to talk with my bride of 20 years while she was relaxing listening to music online.  She has a heartful knack at cultivating this moment for the absolute most it has to offer; and her target today was rolling through various versions of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. We listened together for a bit, and I want to share a few of our favorites with you:

Also, however, these stirring performances communicate at a much deeper, heart-centered, soul-kissed place within the whole-of-experiencing-now that simply cannot be described in words, . . . much like the scents and the tastes of love.  So deep.  So rich.  So pure . . . so nourishing; laden with truth, beauty and a higher wisdom.

Also consider that a Google search on the single term “hypnosis” returns over 9,840,000 results:  “Persuasion” returns even more  . . . 13,100,000!

All these facts are clear indicators of the influence language can, and does, exert on our emotions, attitudes, beliefs and actions.

Too often, the language we use is so habituated, it is completely out of awareness, and fails to match actual, present experience.  We frequently repeat the same old words and phrases we have used for years, without realizing exactly what we are saying and how we are discoloring the fresh experience of this moment.  Yet, we distort it just the same; and this is true whether we are communicating with others or in dialoguing with self.

Unfortunately, we all too frequently err on the side of habituated negative self-talk, fears and worries.  Yet, each time we do, we subtly reinforce a dis-eased self-image, and remain entrenched in symptom experiences; often, resulting in even more intensified symptoms!

With all the talk in recent years about the “law of attraction”, perhaps the language of “ill” health and “dis-ease” on the one hand, or self healing on the other, provide  the clearest examples of the power of our words in manifesting experience!

Consider focusing for a spell on how “bad” or “terrible” or  “awful” you’ve been feeling.  What’s the liklihood of feeling stronger, more energized, or even “better” after such negative focus and commiserating?  Most likely, whether dealing with  a cold, chronic pain, or long-term  disease, symptoms will persist and even intensify.

So, you say sure, but when I feel awful, . . . I feel awful!  I don’t necessarily feel any better because of positive thinking or positive self-talk.  In fact, I can feel worse! Actually, I happen to agree with you.  What is . . . just is; and denying present experience typically proves to be nothing more than futile and frustrating mind games.

Consider also, however, that it is possible to pay attention to current symptoms for the uniquely fresh experiences they do provide.  Indeed, linguistic research shows that turning your attention to this moment’s physical sensations can be significantly relieving!

An example would be to describe the color, shape, temperature, and sound of current symptoms.  Once you have done so, you can then begin to play-with those sensations, and experience cooler colors, softer shapes, lower temperatures, and more pleasant sounds. . . Yes, this does take practice, but it also works!

I can personally attest to the power of this approach in self-relieving chronic pain; as well as professionally, in supporting others who learn the power of this same self healing response-ability!

And it all starts with the language of healing or “ill” health you choose in this moment.  So, why not give it a try, practice for a bit?  What do you have to lose, . . . except perhaps intense symptoms!

Please, do begin to pay attention to the dialogues going on inside (self-talk), as well as how you refer to symptoms when sharing such experiences with others; and let the “law of attraction” be a useful device to become more aware that the language you use now (be it healing or dis-ease) very simply creates more of the same.
